Aurora James
Canadian-American fashion designer and founder of Brother Vellies, who proves that honouring cultural heritage and pushing innovation aren’t opposites - they’re collaborators. James partners with traditional artisans across Africa, Mexico, and beyond, integrating centuries-old craftsmanship (Moroccan shoemaking, Kenyan beadwork, Ethiopian weaving) with contemporary luxury design. But her creative integration goes deeper than aesthetics - she ensures fair wages, preserves endangered craft skills, and disrupts fashion’s extractive relationship with artisan communities. Her 15 Percent Pledge demanded that major retailers commit shelf space to Black-owned businesses, proving that cultural creative integration extends to systemic economic justice. James demonstrates that the most innovative design often comes from honouring traditional knowledge while reimagining its application.
