Writing
Maya Angelou
Poet and author who maintained strict creative rituals throughout her 50+ year career. Angelou rented hotel rooms to write, arriving at 6:30am with a Bible, dictionary, deck of cards, bottle of sherry, and yellow legal pads. She removed all artwork from the walls. This wasn’t superstition - it was environmental design for accessing creative confidence. Angelou understood that rituals create psychological bridges between ordinary consciousness and creative flow states. Her morning ritual wasn’t about the specific objects; it was about creating consistent conditions that signalled to her brain “now we create.” She demonstrated that creative confidence isn’t something you wait to feel - it’s something you design access to through deliberate practice.
